Gurkha Hill

Cheriton Hil (c) WCCP

Dover and Folkestone both have well established Gurkha communities who regularly access the heritage within the scheme area.  There are sections of this community who are herbalists and use the native plants of the downland areas to create remedies and infusions.

One of the ways Up on the Downs has achieved engagement with these communities is to award a grant to local business, Creative Places. They organised a route to be walked each season on the Folkestone Downs (Ghore Danda). Along the way, ideas were gathered for decorating glass pendants, that reflected the things they saw along the route. The display of this art now is situated at George's Barn (the start of the route walked). They also produced a leaflet which Up on the Downs then had translated into Nepalese.

Gurkha Walk

Up on the Downs continues to liaise with the community to hopefully work with them on more things in the future!
