Taking Stock

South-Foreland-(c)-J_Newman

The Up on the Downs scheme area contains valuable areas of chalk grassland that are managed by grazing animals from a variety of organisations from charities to farmers and local authorities.  They are often based near Dover and Folkestone in areas that a lot of people use for recreation.  Finding the right animals at the right time of year and managing the relationship between urban populations and livestock can be a tricky task.

Taking Stock is a project that allows partner organisations to work more closely together to:

  • link land owners and managers to graziers more effectively which will give more flexibility and control over grazing regimes and access to new pasture for graziers.
  • provide livestock that all partners can use.
  • promote a series of events that help improve the link between the farming community and local people.  These events will promote the benefits of grazing to the areas that people live and the products and benefits that livestock provide.
