East Wear Bay Archaeology

Applicant: Canterbury Archaeological Trust

Project: East Wear Bay Archaeological Field School 2015

Grant award: £8464

The East Wear Bay Archaeological Field School was a four-week training program, focussed on the significant Iron Age and Roman settlement on Folkestone’s East Cliff. It offered high quality training in the skills needed to excavate and record a complex archaeological site. A bursary scheme helped local under-25s to participate in this training. An exhibition and tours informed visitors plus an existing hut was refurbished as an office and educational base.  The project has extended into 2016 and a second dig and conference have now taken place.
