Adders in Decline

Applicant: Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group

Project: Adders in Decline Up on the Downs

Grant award: £450

There is concern about the national conservation status of adders and KRAG has been collecting information about the status of the species in Kent.  However, SE Kent remains under-recorded and this project has helped to rectify this situation with the assistance of partners, Kent Wildlife Trust, White Cliffs Countryside Partnership and National Trust.

A training course was been run for KRAG and partners' volunteers and refugia (corrugated metal sheets and roofing felt) were placed at 3 sites in the Up on the Downs area in order to monitor reptile populations (and specifically adders) on these sites.  After the project was completed the refugia remained with the partner organisations and future surveys have taken place using the volunteers trained during this project.
